OpenRouter Alternative: 7-Point Checklist for Production

Choosing an OpenRouter alternative comes down to seven checks: content freedom, price clarity, API compatibility, payment options, rate limits, data policy and the path to a final decision. Use this checklist to compare any provider on the same prompts and the same budget.

Summary

  • Test content freedom on your own prompts; a provider's marketing page does not show how it behaves.
  • Compare prices per 1M tokens and calculate cost from real usage, not from list pages alone.
  • A drop-in replacement needs only a base URL and a key change; anything more is a cost to count.
  • Our rates are $0.15 per 1M input tokens and $0.50 per 1M output tokens, with prepaid credit that never expires.

1. Content Freedom: True Uncensoring

Send a fixed set of lawful but sensitive prompts to each provider. Include adult fiction, blunt health questions and security research. Record every refusal, every warning and every change of topic.

Our endpoint answers those requests directly. The one hard limit is sexual content involving minors.

2. Pricing Transparency: Token vs. Model

Some providers charge per model, others per token. Put every price on the same basis, dollars per 1M input tokens and dollars per 1M output tokens, before you compare anything.

ItemPrice
Input tokens$0.15 per 1M
Output tokens$0.50 per 1M
Trial credit$0.50, valid 7 days

3. API Compatibility: Drop-in Replacement

Point the official OpenAI SDK at the new base URL, send one request and read the answer. The endpoint is https://proxyaiopen.com/v1, and the model id is uncensored.

Check streaming, tool calls and error codes the same way. A provider that needs a changed client is not a drop-in replacement, and that change has a cost.

4. Payment Flexibility: Crypto Only

Top-ups are paid in USDT on TRC20 or USDC on Base, starting at $20. Bonus credit applies from $50, at 5% from $50, 10% from $100 and 15% from $200. No card is needed to start, because the trial credit covers the first tests.

Check how each provider handles a balance that runs out during a busy hour, because that decides whether your product stops or keeps running on credit you have not paid for.

5. Rate Limits and Concurrency

Each key allows 300 requests per minute and 8 requests at the same time. Compare those numbers with your peak load. Test a burst slightly above the limit and check that the answer is a clear 429 response, not a timeout.

6. Privacy: Data Usage and Training

Ask each provider in writing whether prompts are used for training, how long logs are kept and who can read them. Our service does not use prompts for training. Check the terms yourself before you send personal data to any API.

7. Support and Account Management

Check how you rotate a key, how you see usage and how you get an answer when something breaks. A key can be replaced at any time, and the old one stops working at once. Usage is visible per request through the usage block in each response.

8. Final Verdict: When to Switch

Switch when the provider passes the content test, the prices are clear on your own usage, the API is a true drop-in replacement and the data policy is one you accept. Keep the current provider in configuration until the new one has run cleanly for several days.

If any one of the seven checks fails for your product, that is enough reason to keep looking.

Common questions

Is this a direct replacement for OpenRouter?

For OpenAI-compatible chat requests, yes. Change the base URL and the key, keep the request format and test the same prompts on both.

Which model id do I send?

Send uncensored. It is the only model on the service.

How do I test before I pay?

A new account gets $0.50 of trial credit, valid for 7 days. Sign up with Google or with an email and a password, and no card is needed.

What is the cheapest way to estimate my cost?

Multiply the input and output tokens from one day of your own traffic by $0.15 and $0.50 per 1M tokens. That gives a realistic monthly figure.
